How do you align your board with your organization's needs? Transitioning people off the board, educating and motivating trustees to take on new roles, and recruiting new trustees to change the culture are just some of the ways staff members have worked to create productive, committed boards. NEWS/UPDATES
Would You Mentor Oprah?
Most successful people say they had mentors who guided and encouraged them along the way. The Queen of Talk is no exception. In an interview captured by the Harvard Mentoring Project, Oprah describes a defining moment in her life with an early mentor and goes on to say:
A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself . . . I think mentors are important and I don't think anybody makes it in the world without some form of mentorship."
To read about Oprah's mentor, and to hear celebrities like Maya Angelou, Bill Clinton and Cal Ripken, Jr. reflect on the people who influenced them, visit The Harvard Mentoring Project.
While you're there, think about whom you would mentor. The next peer mentoring class will begin in October 2010. The deadline for protégé and mentor applications is Friday, August 27, 2010. For more information, click here

Request for Scholarship Funding
Each year AFP Chicago members have the opportunity to assist development professionals who do not have the resources to attend the Midwest Conference on Philanthropy. AFP Chicago's objective has always been to offer educational resources and the collective professional expertise of our membership – in accessible and user-friendly formats. The Fellows Program is an outreach initiative of the AFP Chicago Chapter created to build awareness of these resources, particularly to those individuals who have been in the profession for three years or less and might otherwise not have the opportunity to take advantage of its services. The AFP Chicago Fellows value what the conference can give them –- increased knowledge, renewed confidence in their own abilities, renewed commitment to the work of philanthropy and a chance to network with a host of other professionals who believe as they do – that the work we do is of value.
We play an integral role in building and strengthening the very fabric of our communities and therefore ask that you consider sponsoring one of our AFP Chicago Fellows so that they are able to attend the Midwest Conference on Philanthropy. A gift of $300 will fund one professional for this year's conference on November 17, 2010. Click here for sponsorship opportunities and to meet the 2010 AFP Chicago Fellows.
